Robert R. Gray moved to Japan in 2001 to study martial arts and meditation. Over the past two decades, he has continued training in traditional kobudo and explored various meditation methods including Shugendo, Shingon Buddhism, and Zen. He holds a 5th-dan in Jissen Kobudo Jinenkan and regularly attends Zen practice at Kakuoji Temple in Tsukuba.
Alongside his training, Robert is a translator and writer. He has translated several books, including Kakusei-Mushin by Manaka Unsui. He is also a freelance writer for the Japanese magazine 秘伝 (Hiden), where he writes bilingual articles on martial arts and meditation. He’s especially interested in the deeper connections between these contrasting traditions and in sharing practical ways to apply their philosophies in daily life.
